چکیده

Studies of human category learning typically focus on situations where explicit category labels accompany each example (supervised learning) or on situations were people must infer category structure entirely from the distribution of unlabeled examples (unsupervised learning). However, real-world category learning likely involves a mixture of both types of learning (semi-supervised learning). Surprisingly, a number of recent ndings suggest that people have difficulty learning in semisupervised tasks. To further explore this issue, we devised a category learning task in which the distribution of labeled and unlabeled items suggested alternative organizations of a category. is design allowed us to determine whether learners combined information from both types of episodes via their patterns of generalization at test. In contrast with the prediction of manymodels, we nd little evidence that unlabeled items inuenced categorization behavior when labeled items were also present.

Category labels versus feature labels: category labels polarize inferential predictions.

What makes category labels different from feature labels in predictive inference? This study suggests that category labels tend to make inductive reasoning polarized and homogeneous. In two experiments, participants were shown two schematic pictures of insects side by side and predicted the value of a hidden feature of one insect on the basis of the other insect. Arbitrary verbal labels were sh...

Labels: Category Markers or Objects Features? Or How Rocks and Stones are Different from Bunnies and Rabbits

The ability to generalize knowledge is crucial for humans, and it has long been known that labels play an important role in inductive generalization. However, the mechanism by which labels contribute to induction remains contested. According to one position, labels contribute to induction because even young children understand that labels denote category membership, and members of the same cate...

Categories and Feature Inference: Category Membership and a Reasoning Bias

This study investigated how the information about category membership influences the prediction of properties of category members. Results revealed that participants’ response patterns became homogeneous and polarized when arbitrary noun labels carried category membership information. We suggest that this tendency arises because category membership information is represented like an abstract ru...

Inference using categories.

How do people use category membership and similarity for making inductive inferences? The authors addressed this question by examining the impact of category labels and category features on inference and classification tasks that were designed to be comparable. In the inference task, participants predicted the value of a missing feature of an item given its category label and other feature valu...

Information about the logical structure of a category affects generalization.

This paper considers whether information about the logical structure of a category affects how people generalize. We carried out three experiments with the following structure: participants were first presented with a set of training items, and were subsequently asked to decide whether new items belonged to the same category as the training items. Each experiment had two conditions that differe...
